Starting on 3rd February 2020, another travel program is on air on J2 channel, this time featuring the United Arab Emirates. As a stay-at-home, I lack any knowledge to judge the content, but after watching the first episode, I am dumbfounded by one critical, unprecedented arrangement. The upset overwhelms me so much that I have to make a post about it.
The program features a female host, Ms. Leung, from Taiwan, which is reminded at the beginning of the show. She is probably the most popular travel host lately since joining TVB. And seeing her appearances in other shows, I am floored how her spoken mandarin is so naturally pleasant, like bird chisels. However, for this time, Ms. Leung elects to speak Cantonese! And with her strong Taiwanese accent! The host says it takes her several months to travel around the country. I can’t imagine how she goes through the whole series not speaking her mother tongue (though her mother has Hong Kong origin). Maybe it’s to appeal to the Hong Kong audience and saves money on an interpreter? Strangely, the show producer may have acknowledged the issue, and arranged a more native Cantonese speaker as a secondary narrator in between the scenes. Quite weird to hear 2 different voices on the same show.
OK, let’s be honest here; if I’m getting sponsored for traveling around the world, I won’t mind speaking my broken Mandarin or English on the show! Another thing to grip about Ms. Leung in this new series is her more conservative fashion style, but that’s not the point of this post…
One thing they do right though is to refer to Dubai as 杜拜, and not 廸拜.
what is her name? and what program is she hosting…i cant read chinese
